Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

Learning about relationships and sex is complex and at times challenging but is vital for our young people.

Much of our own learning is likely to have come from peers, parents, siblings, school, picked up implicitly through the media and social media and even through experimentation.

Children and young people with special educational needs may not always have the opportunities to learn about relationships and sex and so gaps might be missing in their understanding. Relationships are complex at the best of times and so gaps in learning could well lead to our young people feeling lonely, not understanding their feelings and frustrated.

We teach and cover RSE in a number of different ways.

  • As part of our PSD, PFA and Science curriculum.
  • During half termly, whole Academy special group sessions (These are usually taught to male and female groups)
  • through our assembly programme

We also have an additional weekly session with the 14-19 phase to explore contextual issues and cover recommended content from our RSE policy.
