How we organise our curriculum

Foxwood Academy is organised into three curriculum phases (Primary, Key Stage 3 and 14-19). Within each phase there are three pathways (Pre-Formal, Semi-Formal and Formal). This provides three clearly determined progression routes for individual children through the Academy.

There are currently four Primary classes, four Key Stage 3 classes and six 14-19 classes (One is based off-site at the City Hospital for their week). Each class has a range of ages within the phase where students are placed according to ability and support requirements.

Primary – EYFS, Key Stage 1 and 2

Students in the Primary phase of the Academy are aged between four and eleven years old.

Classes in all three pathways follow a Mainstream Primary School model where the class tutor delivers the majority of the curriculum at the appropriate level. Their curriculum consists of core timetabled lessons in English and Mathematics along with a range of other subject based learning.

Secondary – Key Stage 3

Students in Key Stage 3 are aged between eleven and fourteen years old.

The Pre-Formal and one of the Semi-Formal classes follow a Mainstream Primary School model where the class tutor delivers the majority of the curriculum at the appropriate level. The Formal and one of the Semi-Formal classes follow a Mainstream Secondary School model where the students move round to specialist classrooms and are taught by specialist subject teachers. The Key Stage 3 curriculum consists of core timetabled lessons in English and Mathematics along with a range of other subject based learning.

Secondary – Key Stage 4 and Post 16 (14-19)

Students in the 14-19 phase of the Academy are aged between fourteen and eighteen years old.

The Pre-Formal class follow a Mainstream Primary School model where the class tutor delivers the majority of the curriculum at the appropriate level. The two Semi-Formal and two Formal classes all follow a Mainstream Secondary School model where the students move round to specialist classrooms and are taught by specialist subject teachers. Their curriculum consists of core timetabled lessons in English and Mathematics along with a range of other subject based learning.

Our sixth 14-19 class, Project SEARCH, is based at The City Hospital and is entirely Employment focussed. Please refer to the link to find out more
